Encounter a variety of migrating bird species, the world’s largest colony of grey seals, and the famed wild horses of Sable Island as they interact in their naturalized environment. Good to Know:

  • When booking this excursion, guests must also be available for the day following the tour date. This two-day travel window is due to the unpredictable island weather and landing conditions.
  • Please expect to walk/hike approximately 8 km in soft sand. Depending on where we locate wildlife, we may travel anywhere from 6 km to 10km.
  • This trip has a maximum group size of 7 guests to ensure personalized attention.
  • Please expect cooler temperatures on the island. Dress in layers and comfortable, active clothing for the time of year and weather. Wear comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots for walking in sand.
  • Bring your favourite packable lunch/snacks and a water bottle. There is potable water on the island to refill. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are also necessary.
  • Don’t forget your camera!

Itinerary:

  • 07:00 – Downtown Halifax pickup for airport transfer
  • 07:30 – Arrive at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport
  • 07:40 – Intros, safety instructions, load helicopter
  • 08:30 – Helicopter departs
  • 09:45 – Land on Sable Island near Main Station
  • 10:00 – Safety orientation with Parks Canada
  • 10:30 – Hike west towards West Light from Main Station
  • 12:00 – Turn east & hike along the South Beach
  • 13:30 – Arrive at Main Station for a snack & break
  • 14:30 – Hike east along the north beach
  • 15:30 – Head west back to Main Station through the dunes
  • 16:30 – Arrive at Main Station
  • 17:00 – Helicopter departs
  • 18:15 – Arrive at the airport
  • 18:30 – Unload helicopter & depart for Halifax

Geordie Mott is the owner and tour director for Picture Perfect Tours and has made numerous trips showcasing the beauty and history of Sable Island since 2017. His family were former superintendents of Sable Island during WWI and he has a unique connection to the island. Geordie has over 25 years of experience working in the hospitality and tourism sectors and is a graduate of NSCAD with degrees in photography and art history.
